Please share:It is known that solid materials containing carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen, such as n- and i-butenes and n- and i-butane, can be produced by reacting a hydrocarbon mixture containing both C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 olefins and a C.sub.4 -C.sub.5 paraffinic compound, such as n-butane, with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst which has been prepared from iron oxide, optionally in combination with other substances. The reaction may be carried out at high temperature, in the presence of steam, using a fixed-bed reactor (K. M. Boyer and W. F. Metzger, Oil and Gas Journal, 58, pages 170-171 (1970)). The oxygen-containing gas is usually air and it is possible to use a mixture of air and steam, for example in the ratio of 4:1 to 1:2 by volume. When air is used, it is necessary to inject oxygen to obtain sufficient oxygen for the reaction. A problem with using oxygen as the oxidant is that it is difficult to control the reaction so that the C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 olefins are not oxidized to carbon dioxide and water. British Patent Specification No. 1,097,996 describes a catalyst containing a support, at least two metals of which at least one is iron and at least one is a metal from the group including copper, molybdenum and tungsten, and small quantities of barium and cobalt or nickel. The catalysts are said to have good activity and selectivity in the conversion of hydrocarbons to higher boiling hydrocarbons and are said to be useful in conversion of gas oil. British Patent Specification No. 1,054,124 describes the formation of synthesis gas from gaseous hydrocarbons and oxygen and in particular the formation of synthesis gas from methanol and air or oxygen. The catalyst used comprises a basic oxide and is particularly suitable for the formation of synthesis gas from methanol and air or oxygen. European Patent Specification No. 23,713 describes a catalyst containing a support, at least two metals of which at least one is iron and at least one is a
